6 Daily Habits That Are Harmful to Your Skin

skinAs we get old, our skin is getting older, too, therefore it needs a special attention in order to maintain its elasticity and beautiful appearance. Everybody knows that moisturizing creams, a daily cleaning routine and cosmetic treatments should be part of our skin care program, especially after we passed 30 years of age.

What fewer people may know is that skin can be affected by our habits and lifestyle, even in cases when there’s apparently no connection between the habit and the skin condition. Here are the most harmful things you should stop doing, if you want your skin to look its best for many years to come:

Smoking

Smoking kills, that’s a proven fact. More and more people realize smoking is an extremely unhealthy habit. It is one of the main causes of lung cancer and BPOC. Both are terrible diseases, which aren’t reversible. Besides, smoking causes the skin to become dull and gray and to lose its natural elasticity. This leads to the formation of wrinkles, thus determining the premature aging of the skin.

Sun

Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight is detrimental for the skin, as it causes its premature aging. Even on overcast days, UV rays penetrate the clouds layer and interact with the skin. This is why it is very important to always wear sunglasses and a sun screen on the most exposed bits of skin. The hands, face and neck are the first ones to get that old look we all hate, therefore we need to cover or protect them from sun. There are facial creams that already contain an SPF factor, so make sure to buy one of those and use it each time you step out of the house. During sunny summer days, you should always use a sun hat and big sunglasses, so you show as little facial skin as possible. Also, remember to cover your cleavage area, either with a piece of clothing or with a good sunscreen. If you don’t do this, your skin will get those brownish sun spots and it will soon look like your grandmother’s skin.

Water

Not drinking enough water will lead to dehydration. The skin will become thin and friable, it will wrinkle more and it will get a tern, dull look. Water is good because it helps the body cleanse itself by flushing out toxins, therefore it is important to make sure we drink enough on a daily basis. If you don’t have this habit, you should form it right now. Measure your daily water intake for a while, until you develop the habit of drinking enough without even thinking about it.

Sugar

Sugar is one of the worst poisons of our modern world. We simply eat too much of it, we put it in our coffee, in our sweets and sometimes even in our main food courses. Sugar is bad because it damages collagen. Collagen is very important for the skin health, therefore if it gets damaged, the skin will be directly affected. Reduce sugar consumption by developing the habit of drinking your coffee black and by cutting on those sweet desserts you love so much. Another thing you could do is to replace sugar from your diet with a natural sweetener such as honey or stevia. Artificial sweeteners are bad for your health, so you shouldn’t go for them instead of sugar. If you can’t give up sugar, at least use the brown one, which is less refined and less harmful for your health.

Alcohol

You probably heard the saying “he has the face of an alcoholic”. Regular alcohol intake in large quantities will not only make you sick and burden your liver, but it will also cause your face develop rosacea, wrinkles and fine lines. People who drink a lot on a daily basis end up by looking much older than their real age and that’s mainly because of the premature aging of the skin and because of the typical redness that develops as a consequence of enlarged blood vessels.
